SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2011 Housekeeping with RealTimeStats

Couple of years ago we were very proud of automating all our maintenance. But with all the cost reduction that is so „popular“ lately, maintenance became kind of a pain-point because of the resource consumption. In order to preserve the quality and performance of our database and reduce the unnecessary resource consumption we turned our maintenance to Real Time Statistics based maintenance. This presentation will cover RTS basics, the process we applied and main benefits we got out of it.

SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2009 DB2 Administration under scrutiny of regulators

Objectives:

Outline:
Introduction – who wants what and why?
What have we done about it?
What are we doing about it?
What is the overhead and what are the benefits?
Real life example – or how do I get that certificate?

Full Abstract:
For years DBA at Zagrebacka banka tried to follow different best practices we have learned about in database management, security, data privacy, availability and so on being unaware of different regulations. However, looking back at last few years and all the things DBA at Zagrebacka banka were involved with, it seems that number of regulations in effect are already met. However there is also a number of those we're still working on.Come join me in this presentation and I'll show you the steps undertaken at Zagrebacka banka to be in compliance.

SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2008 Every Day’s Life of a DBA or How Do I Handle THAT Query?!

Objectives:
This presentation is based on real life query examples. It will take the audience on a trip through different ideas and tiny tricks that we have used in our shop to deal with special situations, hard-to-explain optimizer behaviour and “unsolvable” performance issues. It will go through examples of performance issues and ways we solved them – covering issues caused by unexpected data type conversions or lack of them, issues caused by padded or not padded indexes (why don’t they work?!) and issues caused by joining multiple tables on range predicates (and MQTs that saved us).

Full Abstract:
Query optimization today is hardly what it used to be. Queries are no longer comprised of two or three equal predicates. With today’s query generators and new (outsourced) applications comming in, query optimization is becoming highly valued skill. While trying to find their way through the mess of joins, subqueries and all the new functionality that comes in with every new DB2 version, DBAs could often use some tips and tricks to make their lives easier. This presentation offers not really ready to use cookbook, but rather gives ideas that could help DBAs to solve their performance issues.

SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2007 The Day After

Presentation objectives:
DR/BC terms and solutions overview
Details on the DR solution installed in ZABA
Setting priority of the data
DB2 group restart considerations
Additional benefits of  the DR solution

Outline:
DR/BC solutions overview – Types of DR
DB2 disaster recovery – Data loss/recovery time considerations
Solution implemented in ZABA – Implementation steps, current situation, hardware overview
DB2 group restart procedure (DB2 DR procedure) – Step by step analysis
Additional capabilities and future plans

Full Abstract:
Data protection and business continuity are the keys to business survival especially in banking. Being open for business in the shortest time after some kind of disaster occurred and having no data loss are high priority demands. This presentation will introduce the audience with the overview of business continuity (BC) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions. The DR/BC solution implemented in Zagrebacka Banka will be discussed in more details. Special attention will be given to DB2 group restart at recovery site emphasizing important elements that need to be considered in such procedure: setting the data priorities, tuning DB2 ZPARMs for group restart and removing restrictive statuses form DB2 objects at DR site. Additional value of having an exact copy of production system available for testing will also be addressed.

SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2006 To Reorg or not to Reorg (is not the question anymore)

Problems  concerning  daily  database maintenance are down to big amount of necessary  out-of-working-hours  DBA  time.  Solution  to  this problem is automation  of  maintenance jobs. After automating execution of imagecopies and  runstats jobs, DBA in Zagrebačka banka implemented complete automation of index and tablespace reorganization. Through  numerous  planning and categorization steps we managed to elaborate in  detail  schedule  and  prerequisites  for  a database/table/application reorganization.   We  used  standard  DB2  utility  jobs  and standard z/OS capabilities  to  devise  the  way  the  jobs  are executed, execution time control,  as  well as error and abend control. All solutions with examples, as well as imperfections and shortcomings and potential future enhancements are topic of this presentation.
